Here is the final piece. I did this in goauche, which is a pain in the butt. Also, I just realized I forgot to take off the magenta curve when I saved this so, whoops!
The concept was to "modernize" the American Gothic. I decided to do role reversals in the home today, since, compared to the original American Gothic, women being the breadwinner is something that is very accepted today, and something that I have actually experienced (My dad was a Stay at Home Dad). So critique is tonight, so if there are any glaring mistakes, now's the time to let me know!
I agree with the above. And on the wife's face, it looks like the shading was done with a dying marker. It's a cool concept, and I love the way you were portraying it but it's not recognizable unless you tell someone.
I like the gender-reversal concept, but I think it's too different from American Gothic in other ways to be a recognizable parody. The character poses are very different, so I didn't recognize the painting they were supposed to be referrencing, and the background is very underdevelopped, when in the original it adds as much to the lifestyle portrayal as the way the characters are dressed.
It looks great, though. I like the colouring, especially on the female figure, and the wavey lines on the rail behind them are a nice touch.
